INTRODUCTION: Cancer patients mostly become anxious and reduced self-esteem, which can negatively impact their life quality and treatment outcomes. AIM: Aim was to assess the effectiveness of GIR in reducing anxiety and enhancing self-esteem among cancer patients undergoing treatment in selected hospitals in Gujarat. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A quasi-experimental approach was employed involving 350 cancer patients randomly assigned to either an Experimental or a Control group. Following the exclusion of 14 participants from the Intervention group and 17 from the Comparison group, the intervention group received 30-minute daily Guided Imagery sessions for a duration of four weeks. In contrast, the Comparison group continued to receive standard care without additional interventions. Anxiety and self-esteem were measured before and after the intervention. RESULTS: No notable differences existed between the groups at baseline. However, post-intervention analysis indicated a statistically significant decrease in anxiety and surge in self-esteem in the study group compared to the comparison group (P ≤ 0.05). The Experimental group showed a mean reduction of 11.61 in anxiety scores and an increase of 8.82 in self-esteem scores. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that GIR is an effective, non-invasive approach to improving psychological well-being in cancer patients and can be integrated into routine care.
